The African Democratic Congress has rejected reports that its chairman, David Mark, has stepped down.
The denial follows controversy after the Independent National Electoral Commission removed his name from its records.
The electoral body also delisted Rauf Aregbesola as the party’s national secretary.
INEC said the action was based on a court ruling, sparking debate about the party’s leadership and future electoral plans.
Rumours quickly spread that the ADC might abandon its platform ahead of the 2027 elections.
However, the party issued a strong rebuttal through its chairman’s media office.
“The assertion that Senator David Mark has stepped down exists only in the warped imagination of those spreading falsehood.”
“There is no contemplation whatsoever of his resignation.”
The statement described the reports as deliberate attempts to create confusion within the party.
ADC Claims Strength, Reports Membership Surge
The party insisted its leadership remains united despite the legal and political tension.
“The ADC leadership remains focused and resolute in its mission.”
“We are determined to resist any plot aimed at undermining multi-party democracy.”
Meanwhile, the party reported a sharp rise in new members following the controversy.
Spokesman Bolaji Abdullahi shared figures on social media.
“Over half a million Nigerians have joined the ADC.”
“Between 7:00 PM and 5:00 PM today, more than 500,000 registered.”
Earlier, he had also revealed a surge within hours of INEC’s announcement.
“Over 40,000 people registered overnight.”
The figures suggest that the dispute may have increased public attention around the party.
Civil Group Warns Against Escalation
Meanwhile, the Peering Advocacy and Advancement Centre in Africa called for restraint.
Its executive director, Ezenwa Nwagwu, warned against escalating tensions.
“There is no need for grandstanding… this matter could have been settled administratively.”
“The ADC leadership could have approached INEC for resolution.”
He pointed to past disputes within the Peoples Democratic Party that were resolved quietly.
“When the PDP had similar issues, they approached INEC and resolved them.”
Nwagwu cautioned that public confrontation could weaken trust in democratic institutions.
“Opposition status is not a shield against scrutiny.”
“Parties seeking power must manage their affairs with due process.”
He added that the situation places INEC in a sensitive position requiring careful handling.
“INEC is dealing with a crisis of legal interpretation.”
