A devastating improvised explosive device (IED) blast has claimed the lives of at least eight people in the early hours of Monday, March 23, 2026.
The explosion occurred along Luma Road in the Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, destroying a vital bridge and hitting a passing vehicle.
The blast took place around 2:00 a.m. when suspected terrorists planted explosives to disrupt movement in the area.
This attack has completely cut off the route linking the Luma, Babana, and Agwara communities, which serves as a major path for traders heading to the Babana border market.
Daily Post reported that the victims were traveling in a commercial vehicle moving between Nuku and Woro.
The vehicle ran over a buried IED, triggering a massive explosion that killed all seven passengers and the driver instantly.
Security Forces Launch Clearance Operations In Borgu
The Niger State Police Command confirmed the incident later on Monday morning. Police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun noted that the bridge was likely targeted to stop security forces from moving easily through the nearby forest areas.
“On 23rd March 2026 at about 6.30 a.m., a report revealed that suspected terrorists used an explosive device and bombed a bridge along Luma road,” Abiodun stated.
He added that the damage happened while the hoodlums were trying to escape security pressure in the area.
Furthermore, the police alleged that monitoring efforts are now “intensified” to prevent the criminals from returning.
Security operatives have already started a clearance operation to sweep the park forest and ensure no other explosives remain hidden on the road.
Local sources reportedly assert that this same group previously tried to damage the bridge to isolate these rural communities.
“On 23rd March 2026 at about 6.30 am, a report received revealed that on the same date at about 2 am, suspected terrorists within the park forest used an explosive device and bombed a bridge located along Luma road, Borgu LGA, connecting Luma-Babana-Agwara communities.
“It was discovered that the bridge was damaged by the hoodlums during security operations in the area.
With the damaged bridge the flow of travellers, goods and services have halted.
The loss of eight lives in a single morning is a painful reminder that the fight for safety on Nigerian highways is far from over, and the mission of the terrorist for this carnage have not been conclusively established.
