Portugal coach Roberto Martinez has explained why he left Cristiano Ronaldo and Bernardo Silva out of his latest squad.

The manager spoke to reporters on Friday, March 20, 2026.

He confirmed that Ronaldo remains a key part of the team for the 2026 World Cup.

The 41-year-old striker is currently recovering from a minor injury. Because of this, he will miss the upcoming friendly matches in North America.

“The World Cup is not at risk. He is not at risk, no,” the coach declared. Martinez noted that the injury is just a small muscle issue.

He expects the captain to return to action in about two weeks.

Ronaldo has not played since February 28. He left the pitch during Al-Nassr’s 3-1 win against Al-Fayha.

His club later confirmed he suffered a hamstring injury. Consequently, the star travelled to Madrid to receive specialised medical treatment.

Martinez praised the forward’s dedication to his fitness this season.

“Cristiano has done a lot of physical work this season, which shows he is in great shape,” he said. Therefore, the staff chose to let him rest now.

According to a report by Goal.com, the decision protects the veteran’s long-term health. The team wants him fresh for the tournament starting this June.

Technical Decisions For Bernardo Silva

Bernardo Silva also missed the call-up for these international games. Martinez explained that Manchester City provided specific medical data about the midfielder.

This information led to the player staying with his club for now.

“Bernardo Silva, it’s a technical choice, based on the medical info that the player’s team gave,” Martinez added.

The manager wants to use these games to test other players in the squad.

He alleged that the team has enough depth to handle these absences. Meanwhile, Portugal will face Mexico at the Estadio Azteca on March 28. After that, they travel to Atlanta to play the United States on April 1.

These matches are the final tests before the World Cup begins. Portugal is in Group K with Uzbekistan and Colombia.

The coach wants to ensure 100% of his core leaders are ready for the opening game.

This news matters to you because it shows how top teams manage their ageing stars. It also gives younger players a chance to prove they can lead the national team.

Fans in the US and Mexico might be sad to miss Ronaldo, but his health comes first.
