A prominent socio-political organization from Nigeria’s Middle Belt region has formally called on former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan to return to the political arena and contest the 2027 presidential election.
The Middle Belt Progressive Forum (MBPF) issued the appeal on Monday, March 16, 2026, stating that Jonathan’s unique leadership experience and “democratic temperament” are exactly what the country needs to navigate its current socio-economic and security hurdles.
The MBPF argued that Jonathan’s tenure from 2010 to 2015 remains a benchmark for national stability.
The group highlighted his ability to foster unity across Nigeria’s complex ethnic and religious divides as a primary reason for their endorsement.
“Nigeria is currently at a crossroads, facing serious economic and security challenges that require a steady, experienced hand,” the group stated.
“Former President Jonathan’s record and his peaceful transition of power in 2015 demonstrate a level of patriotism and maturity that is rare in our political landscape.”
The forum urged regional leaders and political stakeholders across the 36 states to set aside partisan differences and support a Jonathan candidacy, should he choose to run.
They noted that the Middle Belt—a critical swing region comprising states like Plateau, Benue, and Nasarawa—is ready to mobilize behind a candidate who prioritizes inclusivity.
A Shifting Political Landscape
Should ex-President heed the call, it could fundamentally reshape the political and electoral permutations leading up to next year’s election.
While some see Jonathan as a “healer” who could stabilize a polarized nation, others point out that the political environment has evolved significantly since he left office over a decade ago.
Jonathan was credited with having quietly conceded defeat and left power, when the then opposition appeared spoiled for war, saying his “presidential ambition was not worth the blood of any Nigerian“.
Despite the growing clamour from groups like the MBPF and the “Bring Back Our Goodluck” movement, the former President has remained ominously silent about his intentions.
His spokesperson, Ikechukwu Eze, has previously cautioned against social media rumors, stating that the former President is currently focused on his peacebuilding and diplomatic missions across Africa.
However, legal experts have already cleared the path for such a return.
In late 2025, several courts affirmed that Jonathan is constitutionally eligible to serve one more four-year term, as he was only elected to the presidency once (in 2011).
As the 2027 general elections begin to loom on the horizon, many believe the former President’s office is carefully weighing national and party considerations before making any official pronouncement.
