The National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved 14 postgraduate programmes for Newgate University, Minna, Niger State. The clearance followed a successful resource verification exercise.
Vice Chancellor Professor Sadiq Yusuf announced the approval at a press briefing in the Senate Chamber. He said the university will admit its first postgraduate students in May 2026.
The programmes include Postgraduate Diplomas, Master’s degrees, Professional Master’s courses, and Doctoral degrees.
They cover management, accounting, finance, computer science, public health, international relations, and development studies.
Expanding Academic Capacity
Yusuf explained that the approval shows the university’s readiness to meet national academic standards.
“The programmes will strengthen research capacity, train high-level professionals and scholars, and contribute to national development through knowledge creation and innovation,” he said.
Newgate University currently runs 16 undergraduate programmes.
With the new approval, it now has 14 postgraduate and 2 undergraduate programmes cleared by the NUC. The student population has grown from 300 to 2,018 in four years.
Among the new offerings are PGDs in Management, Accounting, Finance, Computer Science, and Public Health.
MSc programmes include Computing, Cyber Security, Accounting, Public Health, and International Relations.
PhDs cover Computer Science, Cyber Security, Public Health, Accounting, Management Studies, and International Relations.
Professional Master’s and Doctorates will be offered in Business Administration, Strategic Studies, Development Studies, International Affairs, and Diplomacy.
The Vice Chancellor assured that the Postgraduate School is structured to deliver research excellence and professional relevance.
He encouraged interested candidates to apply through the university’s website or admissions office.
He added that the approval comes at a time when demand for quality postgraduate training is rising across Nigeria.
The university hopes to play a bigger role in producing specialised skills and advancing research for national development.
