President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday ordered the immediate suspension of the e-ticket system at Nigeria’s major airports. The directive followed chaos and long gridlock affecting travelers following the introduction of the new system.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, announced the decision after the Federal Executive Council meeting at the State House. The President presided over the meeting.
Keyamo said the old cash collection system has operated for over 50 years. He added that it encouraged corruption. However, the sudden switch to a cashless e-ticket system caused serious problems at the Abuja and Lagos airports.
Travelers faced long queues. Many missed their flights. As a result, pressure mounted on the government to act quickly.
Keyamo explained the President’s decision, saying, “The President ordered the stoppage because of the challenges of gridlock created by the introduction of the e-ticket system.”
He added, “The President is not happy with the difficulties that travellers are encountering at the Abuja and Lagos airport.”
Government Plans Better Hybrid Payment System
Although the e-ticket system has been suspended, the government does not plan to abandon digital payments altogether.
Instead, Keyamo said authorities will redesign the system.
He stated, “It should not take too long.” He also said the ministry will seek private sector support to build a better solution.
According to him, the government may adopt a hybrid system. This would allow both cash and electronic payments. Travelers who already have FAAN cards will still be able to use them.
In addition, the ministry is ready to pay commission to private operators who can manage the new collection process under clear rules.
Keyamo noted that the President’s action shows compassion. He said the goal is to ease the burden on travelers while a better system is developed.
For now, airport officials will return to the previous method.
Meanwhile, discussions with private partners will begin soon. The government hopes to present an improved and smoother payment system to the President shortly.
