Tinubu Nominates Taiwo Oyedele as Minister of State for Finance

President Bola Tinubu has nominated Mr. Taiwo Oyedele as Minister of State for Finance, replacing Dr. Doris Anite-Uzoka.

Anite-Uzoka will now serve as Minister of State for Budget and National Planning, her third portfolio in this administration.

Tinubu conveyed Oyedele’s nomination to the Senate in a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio on Tuesday.

Oyedele, 50, hails from Ikaram, Akoko in Ondo State. Until his nomination, he chaired the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms, where he led efforts to overhaul Nigeria’s tax system.

Nigeria’s got four new tax laws that are pretty big deals, all signed into effect in 2025. They’re basically a whole revamp of the country’s tax system.

Here are the names of the four acts :

• The Nigeria Tax Act (NTA): This one’s a big consolidation of a bunch of older tax laws, aiming to make things simpler and clearer for everyone.
• The Nigeria Tax Administration Act (NTAA): This act focuses on how taxes are managed and collected, even establishing the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) to take over from the old Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).
• The Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act (NRSA): This specifically establishes the new Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), giving it expanded powers for revenue collection.
• The Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Act (JRBA): This act sets up a new Joint Revenue Board and also strengthens the Tax Appeal Tribunal for resolving tax disputes more efficiently.

These laws are all about modernizing things, boosting revenue from non-oil sectors, and making the tax system more transparent and fair.

Oyedele’s Background and Career

He is an economist, accountant, and public policy expert. He studied accountancy and finance at Yaba College of Technology, earning a Higher National Diploma. He later obtained a BSc in applied accounting from Oxford Brookes University.

Oyedele also completed executive education programmes at the London School of Economics, Yale University, the Gordon Institute of Business Science, and the Harvard Kennedy School.

He spent 22 years at PwC, joining in 2001 and rising to become Fiscal Policy Partner and Africa Tax Leader.

Beyond his corporate career, he is a professor at Babcock University in Ogun State and a visiting scholar at Lagos Business School.

His nomination is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s fiscal management and economic policy direction.
