National Boxing Week Opens in Lagos March 1–6, Diaspora Boxers Arrive

The Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) has confirmed the arrival of several foreign-based Nigerian boxers ahead of the maiden National Boxing Week.

The event will run from March 1–6 at the Brai Ayonote Boxing Complex, National Stadium, Lagos. It will feature National Open Trials to select Team Nigeria’s representatives for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Organisers say the programme is in line with the National Sports Commission’s agenda for credibility and competitiveness in Nigerian boxing. Diaspora athletes competing alongside home-based boxers is seen as more transparent and fairn.

NBF Vice President Omonlei Imadu described the development this way.

“This is a new era for Nigerian boxing. The fact that our foreign-based athletes are returning home to compete speaks volumes about the credibility of the process we are building. Selection for the Commonwealth Games will be fierce, but it will be fair and strictly based on merit,” he said.

The trials will cover 10 weight categories for men and women. Clubs, state associations, institutions, and eligible Nigerian boxers worldwide are expected to present one boxer per category.

Beyond competition, National Boxing Week will include seminars for referees and coaches, athlete orientation sessions, and discussions to strengthen domestic boxing.

The Federation will also unveil digital initiatives such as automated licensing and governance systems to improve transparency and efficiency.

The event will honor Nigerian boxing legend Hogan “Kid” Bassey, whose global achievements continue to inspire younger fighters.

Officials say the week represents a defining chapter in repositioning Nigerian boxing.
