The Abia State Government has innovated a new digital payment system for its public transport fleet. Consequently, commuters can now use the Abia Connect Card for all Green Shuttle services.
This action follows the digital plans led by Governor Alex Otti.
The government intends to make public travel more modern, stopping the use of cash on these specific bus routes.
This change ensures a smooth experience for everyone who uses the buses daily.
The electric buses have been free since October 2025 when it launched.
Simple Steps to Use the Card
Using the smart card is very simple for the public. First, passengers tap their card on the payment device when they enter the bus. Then, they wait for a “Welcome” sound. This sound confirms that the system accepted the payment.
Furthermore, the government is giving out the first card for free. However, riders must pay a small ₦50 fee for every top-up they make.
The good news is that the money on the card never expires. Additionally, the card itself stays valid forever. Each rider needs their own card for a trip.
Residents must have an Abia State Social Identity Number (ABSSIN) to sign up. This requirement helps the state keep a clear record of its transport users.
You can get a card at many popular spots. These include Ariaria Junction, Osisioma Flyover, and the PH Road First Bus Stop.
The Green Shuttle buses are a key part of the state’s effort to reduce travel costs. These buses provide affordable transportation within the state and offer a clean, air-conditioned, and safe environment for passengers.
A trip from Umuahia – the capital city to Aba – the industrial and commercial hub costs only ₦1,000.
Many residents have praised the Governor for providing these vehicles. Now, the digital card makes them even better.
The Senior Special Assistant on New Media, Comrade S.O.B. Igwe, spoke about the update.
He stated, “The Abia Connect Card represents another bold step towards a structured, technology-driven and transparent transport system in Abia State.” He added that a new Abia is here. The state is going digital to stay connected.
This helps prevent the loss of money. It also protects passengers from carrying cash.
Commuters can also find registration points at Ebem Park and Abiriba Junction. Other spots include Akara Junction and Uzuakoli.
These locations cover both cities and rural areas.
