The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency has asked law enforcement to investigate allegations involving singer Simi, following resurfaced social media posts linked to her time at her mother’s daycare.
Speaking on Channels TV’s Morning Brief, Executive Secretary Lola Vivour-Adeniyi said the agency had referred the matter to the Commissioner of Police for preliminary inquiry.
“As for the Simi case, we cannot act like we have not seen these things. We have a duty to at least commence a preliminary investigation,” she said.
Vivour-Adeniyi, however, predicted that prosecution would be difficult without testimony from survivors.
“The truth of the matter is it’s going to be very difficult to prosecute the lady without a survivor being present,” she added, urging anyone affected to step forward.
The controversy began after Simi condemned rape culture online earlier this month involving TikToker Mirabel, whose allegation of sexual assault ultimately even turned out to be false.
Then, old tweets of Simi from 2012–2013, when she worked at her mother’s daycare, were dug up and widely shared, and some interpreted as evidence of perversions of her own.
Simi later clarified that the old posts reflected ordinary childcare experiences and affection for children, and not any misconduct. But not everyone agrees with her.
The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) also announced it will investigate credible reports of child abuse or misconduct in daycare centres nationwide.
The agency encouraged individuals with evidence or firsthand knowledge to reach out confidentially.
At present, no formal charges have been filed against Simi. Authorities say the focus is on gathering factual testimony to determine whether any legal thresholds for investigation or prosecution are met.
