Zambian Students Build AI Tools to Drive Innovation Across Zambia

Young engineers in Zambia are using artificial intelligence to tackle everyday challenges on university campuses.

One of them, 20-year-old software engineering student Innocent Mugwadi, created Tensor, a system that explains the mathematical operations behind neural networks.

Mugwadi said he struggled to understand the math side of AI despite attending boot camps, so he built Tensor to translate complex functions into simple explanations.

Another student, Enock Chisulo, a fourth-year electrical engineering student at the University of Zambia, developed Moteev, an AI-powered app that helps students order groceries and essentials directly from their phones.

The app now serves more than 800 students at UNZA and Copperbelt University. Chisulo’s team of 18 plans to expand into other African countries after winning the 2025 2-Minute Drill Competition hosted by American entrepreneur David Meltzer.

Dr. Tafadzwa Munzwa, co-founder of DAWA Health, said Zambia’s youth are driving innovation.

“Young Zambians are really embracing emerging technologies like artificial intelligence,” he said, adding that their solutions are positioning the country as a leading innovation hub in southern Africa.
