The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has confirmed the arrival of about 100 United States military personnel and equipment at Bauchi Airfield. The deployment is part of a bilateral defence cooperation initiative between Nigeria and the US.

In a statement issued Monday, Director of Defence Information Brigadier General Samaila Uba said the move followed engagements between Nigerian and US delegations during a recent bilateral working group meeting.

According to DHQ, the presence of US personnel stems from a formal request by the Federal Government of Nigeria for assistance in military training, technical support, and intelligence-sharing.

The DHQ clarified that the US personnel are technical specialists serving strictly in advisory and training roles, not combat forces.

“All training activities will be conducted under the authority, direction, and control of the Nigerian Government and in close coordination with the Armed Forces of Nigeria,” the statement read.

The collaboration will provide Nigeria with access to specialised technical capabilities aimed at strengthening its ability to counter terrorist threats and protect vulnerable communities.

Joint Training Exercises

Under the arrangement, Nigerian troops will participate in joint training exercises and intelligence-focused cooperation initiatives alongside US advisers.

These activities are designed to improve operational readiness and enhance the ability of Nigerian forces to identify and neutralise extremist groups.

The DHQ reiterated that the Armed Forces of Nigeria remain committed to degrading and defeating terrorist organisations while safeguarding national sovereignty and citizens.

Brigadier General Uba assured Nigerians of transparency, pledging to provide clear and timely information on ongoing military cooperation.

He said the partnership reflects Nigeria’s determination to strengthen its defence capacity through international collaboration.
