Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has inaugurated the Enugu Haier Factory, a ₦20 million Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) by Haier Global Business in partnership with the state government.
The factory, located in Enugu’s capital city, will produce smartphones, tablets, computers, smart boards, Android televisions, education and health technologies, and renewable energy solutions.
Vice President of Haier Group, Sun Yongle, said the facility has a designed production capacity of 200,000 units annually and will employ about 100 people initially.
He added that Haier is planning an additional ₦30 million investment in agriculture, mining, and transportation.
Governor Mbah said the investment aligns with his administration’s push to grow Enugu’s economy from ₦4.4 billion to ₦30 billion.
“This partnership represents the convergence of vision, innovation, and opportunity – to generate Made in Enugu technologies that compete globally,” he stated.
He explained that the devices powering schools and industries will no longer be imported, reducing costs and building local capacity.
He added that the factory would serve as a training platform for vocational institutions, generate jobs, and stimulate small businesses.
Mbah praised President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies, saying they had attracted steady inflows of FDIs.
“We have seen the naira strengthen, our foreign reserves grow exceedingly, and a downward trajectory in inflationary trends,” he said.
Haier’s Commitment
Yongle said Haier Group, with global revenue exceeding $60 billion in 2025, owns brands including GE Appliances, Candy, Hoover, and Fisher & Paykel.
“Our goal is for our products to be not only Made in Enugu, but also Designed in Enugu, with management and technical teams mainly composed of local professionals,” he said.
He announced plans for a local Research and Development Centre and a training hub to provide free internships for students.
Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Dr. Kingsley Udeh, said the initiative supports the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
“This aligns with the President’s vision of taking Nigeria to a $1 trillion economy,” he said.
Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ndubueze Mbah, praised the governor for completing the factory in 18 months, describing it as a boost for skills-based education.
Students also expressed gratitude, with Precious Anih of TVET College saying, “You have made us look into the future and have hope.”
