Labour Party Crisis Not Abating as Usman Calls for Abure’s Arrest

Nigeria’s Labour Party is facing fresh turmoil after its National Working Committee, led by acting chairman Nenadi Usman, demanded the arrest of former chairman Julius Abure.

At a press conference in Abuja on Monday, Usman accused Abure and his supporters of storming the party’s national secretariat.

She alleged they destroyed property, threatened officials, and stole confidential documents.

“We demand the immediate arrest and prosecution of Julius Abure and others for criminal invasion, contempt of court, impersonation and threats to constitutional democracy in Nigeria,” Usman declared.

She said laptops, phones, and financial records were taken, while billboards bearing her image were demolished.

Usman added that the group posted about the incident online, “practically indicting themselves.”

Accusations and Counterclaims

Usman said the operation lasted more than 30 minutes and involved the removal of sensitive party materials.

She called on the Department of State Services, the Inspector General of Police, and other agencies to intervene.

Abure’s faction quickly denied the allegations. In a statement signed by National Publicity Secretary Obiora Ifoh, they dismissed Usman’s claims as “fallacious and laughable.”

The faction alleged that at 1 a.m. on February 10, individuals climbed the secretariat’s fence, removed the party’s billboard, and replaced it with Usman’s.

Ifoh questioned how Usman gained access to the offices, insisting there was no official handover.

Legal Dispute

Abure’s camp argued that judicial proceedings are ongoing and that Usman cannot claim leadership until appeals are resolved.

“We have since stayed the execution of the judgment of the lower court, and appealed the judgment because we believe that justice was denied us,” Ifoh said.

He urged the public to disregard Usman’s press conference, calling it an attempt to discredit the party’s leadership.

The Labour Party has faced internal battles since Abure’s removal. Usman’s demand for Abure’s arrest marks a sharp escalation in the conflict.

Both factions continue to fight for control, leaving members uncertain about the party’s future.
