Sadness has gripped Nigeria’s academic community following the death of Oreoluwa Odetunde, a graduate of the University of Lagos, who was found in her off-campus apartment in New York City, United States.

Odetunde, who earned a degree in Economics from the University of Lagos, had relocated to the United States to further her education and was enrolled in a Master of Business Administration program at Cornell University at the time of her death.

Information available indicates that she was discovered in her residence after friends and colleagues reportedly became concerned when they were unable to reach her.

University authorities later confirmed her passing to members of the school community and described the development as a painful loss to students and staff.

No official details have yet been released regarding the exact cause of death. Local authorities are said to be handling the matter, while university officials have advised against speculation until investigations are concluded.

Tributes Flood in on Social Media

There’s been an outpouring of tributes from former classmates and acquaintances in Nigeria and abroad, many of whom recalled her as hardworking, focused and deeply committed to her academic goals.

Odetunde’s passing has also renewed conversations about the pressures faced by international students living far from home, including emotional stress, isolation and the challenges of adapting to new academic and social environments.

There have been no funeral arrangements, nor is it known whether she will be flown back to Nigeria.

As investigations continue, Odetunde is being remembered as a young scholar whose ambitions were cut short, leaving behind a legacy of academic excellence and a story that has touched many within and outside Nigeria.
