Champions League: Mourinho Warns ‘Wounded’ Real Madrid Will Be Dangerous

Benfica manager José Mourinho has issued a stark warning ahead of his team’s UEFA Champions League playoff rematch with Real Madrid, saying the Spanish giants are “wounded — and a wounded king is dangerous,” as both sides prepare for their first-leg clash in Lisbon this Tuesday.

Mourinho’s remarks came during a press briefing as Benfica and Real Madrid gear up for a two-legged playoff tie in the Champions League Round of 32.

The match follows a dramatic encounter between the two sides in the league phase that saw Benfica beat Real Madrid 4–2, a result that complicated Madrid’s campaign for automatic qualification.

Despite that historic result, Mourinho believes that the tie is far from settled and that his side cannot afford complacency.

The Portuguese tactician — known for his tactical acumen and psychological approach — emphasized that while Real Madrid’s reputation is unmatched, their recent setback makes them more threatening.

“We will play the first leg with our heads, ambition, and confidence. We know what we did to the kings of the Champions League. They are wounded. And a wounded king is dangerous.”

Mourinho also highlighted the tactical challenge, reminding that early advantage does not guarantee success in two-legged ties.

He said the rematch will require focus, discipline, and a careful approach from Benfica, as Madrid will aim to reassert their dominance in Europe.

Madrid and Benfica Current Form Compared

Real Madrid, the 15-time European champions, dropped into the playoff tie after missing automatic qualification and now seek to use home advantage in the second leg at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium to overturn Benfica’s advantage.

Meanwhile, Benfica — currently third in Portugal’s Primeira La Liga- aim to capitalise on momentum from recent results and the support of their home crowd at Estádio da Luz.

With the first leg approaching, Mourinho’s comments underline the belief that tactical discipline and respect for Real Madrid’s pedigree will shape this much-anticipated Champions League showdown.

Both clubs are aware that this fixture is as much psychological as it is tactical, and the outcome could define their European campaign this season.
