Suspected bandits have abducted nine worshipers during a night vigil at St. John’s Catholic Church, Ojije, in Utonkon district, Ado Local Government Area of Benue State.

The attack occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday, February 8, 2026. Victims included women and youths attending the vigil.

Jude Onwe, National Publicity Secretary of the Ufia Development Association, confirmed the incident.

“Around 2 a.m. on Sunday, those women and youths—about nine worshippers—were abducted from St. John’s Catholic Church, Ojije in Utonkon, Ado LGA, while they were at night vigil,” he said.

Local government chairman Sunday Oche also confirmed the abduction. He explained that the church had been holding a 30-day vigil and regretted that organisers ignored advice to involve security operatives.

“We received the sad news of the abduction, and I have mobilised all the security agencies, and we are working seriously,” he said.

Oche warned that night activities without security presence expose communities to danger.

“Our concern is that people have refused to adhere to advice to constantly involve the police whenever a night activity—be it marriage, burial, or festival—extends beyond 9 p.m.,” he added.

Benue State Police Command spokesperson DSP Udeme Edet confirmed that tactical teams have been deployed. “Tactical team already deployed to rescue the victims,” he said.

Authorities assured residents that efforts are underway to rescue the abducted worshipers.

So sad indeed! May God help this nation overcome this evil and pray the government does the needful.
