Atletico Madrid Close in on Transfer of Nigerian Superstar Ademola Lookman

Spanish giants Atletico Madrid are on the verge of completing the signing of Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman from Italian side Atalanta, in what is set to be their first major addition of the winter transfer window.

The move comes after the departure of Giacomo Raspadori earlier in January, which forced Los Colchoneros to accelerate their search for a replacement in attack.

Club sources revealed that Lookman has long been on Atletico’s radar, but negotiations intensified in recent days as the club moved decisively to secure his services.

“Atletico are ready to pay €35 million plus €5 million in performance-related bonuses, with only minor details left to be resolved,” reports indicated.

Turkish side Fenerbahce were initially leading the race after holding talks with Atalanta over a €40 million transfer. However, Atletico Madrid have now overtaken them and are close to finalizing the deal.

Despite receiving an improved financial offer from Fenerbahce, Lookman has made his preference clear. He has prioritized the Atletico Madrid project, with a verbal agreement on a €40 million package already in place.

“The Nigerian international has already given his approval to the move, and discussions are ongoing to finalize personal terms,” sources close to the negotiations confirmed.

What Lookman Brings to Atletico

If completed, the deal will see Lookman bring his pace, versatility, and attacking flair to the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, strengthening Atletico’s squad for the remainder of the season.

The 28-year-old forward, who has played for clubs including Everton, RB Leipzig, Fulham, Leicester City, and Atalanta, is known for his ability to operate across the front line.

His performances for Nigeria at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) have also boosted his reputation as one of Africa’s most dynamic attackers.

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone is expected to deploy Lookman in multiple attacking roles, giving the team more options in their push for success in La Liga and the Champions League.
