No one can tell how a simple Nollywood actor and director got roped in an alleged coup plot against the President and government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. But actor Stanley Amandi has been arrested alongside several military officers accused of plotting to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s government.
Amandi, who previously served as chairman of the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN), Enugu State chapter, was taken into custody in September 2025, according to sources within the guild.
Investigators allege that the filmmaker was recruited as a media propagandist by the suspected coup planners, who reportedly mapped out a violent seizure of power. Senior government figures, including President Tinubu, Vice President Kashim Shettima, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and House Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, were said to be listed for assassination.
On Monday, the Defence Headquarters confirmed the existence of the unlawful plan to unseat the Tinubu administration. Officials said implicated officers would face trial before military judicial panels.
In a statement, the military explained that investigations had been concluded and submitted to “appropriate superior authority in line with extant regulations.”
The probe was described as “comprehensive,” covering “all circumstances surrounding the conduct of the affected personnel.”
The statement added that the inquiry uncovered “a number of officers with allegations of plotting to overthrow the government,” stressing that such conduct was “inconsistent with the ethics, values and professional standards required of members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.”
