There was tension in Abuja on Monday when striking workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) reportedly chased the motorcade of the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, during a protest over unresolved welfare and salary issues.
In a video sighted by Daily Trust, the workers, who have been on strike, were seen gathering to press their demands before becoming visibly agitated as Wike’s convoy passed through the area.
The protesters were heard chanting and moving toward the vehicles while calling for attention to their grievances.
Last week, FCTA workers began an indefinite strike over what they described as “authorities’ failure to address long-standing labour and welfare demands.”
The strike has already led to the shutdown of activities across major government offices in Abuja, crippling administrative functions and disrupting services.
Legal Action Against JUAC
In response, Wike filed a suit against the Joint Unions Action Committee (JUAC) at the National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN).
The case, marked NICN/ABJ/17/2026, was filed at the Abuja division of the NICN and is scheduled for hearing today.
Court documents showed that the claimants in the suit are the FCT Minister and the FCTA, while the defendants are JUAC president Rifkatu Iortyer and secretary-general Abdullahi Saleh, sued in their representative capacities.
The confrontation shows serious unease between the FCTA leadership and its workforce. Workers insist that their demands for improved welfare and salary structures must be addressed, while the administration has opted for legal measures to challenge the strike.
