Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has claimed that medical degrees will become obsolete as AI-powered robots surpass human surgeons.
Speaking on the Moonshots podcast hosted by Peter Diamandis, Musk said humanoid robots like Tesla’s Optimus will outperform the world’s best surgeons within three years.
“Right now there’s a shortage of doctors and great surgeons,” Musk explained. “It takes a super long time to learn how to be a good doctor. Doctors have limited time, they make mistakes. How many great surgeons are there? Not that many.”
When Diamandis asked if medical school was still worthwhile, Musk replied: “Yes. Pointless.”
This is not the first time Musk has predicted the end of human surgeons. In April 2025, he pointed to Neuralink’s surgical robot, which implants ultra-thin electrodes into the brain with precision beyond human capability.
Musk argued that such advancements show robots will soon master complex medical procedures.
While robotic surgery is advancing rapidly, medical experts caution that technology cannot replace human judgment, accountability, and ethical responsibility.
They warn that even the most advanced robots lack the ability to make nuanced decisions about patient care, especially in unpredictable situations.
The debate highlights growing tension between technological innovation and the irreplaceable role of human expertise in medicine.
