Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, a prominent figure in the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is currently at the presidential villa in Abuja for a meeting with President Bola Tinubu.
Makinde’s arrival came shortly after Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang, who recently defected from the PDP to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), entered the State House and proceeded to the president’s office.
Makinde was one of the influential “G-5” PDP governors who opposed the emergence of Atiku Abubakar as the party’s 2023 presidential candidate, insisting that power should rotate to the South after Muhammadu Buhari’s eight-year rule from the North.
The group included Nyesom Wike (Rivers), Samuel Ortom (Benue), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia).
While the G-5 played a role in Tinubu’s 2023 victory, cracks have since emerged, particularly between Makinde and Wike, now Minister of the Federal Capital Territory.
Rift With Wike
Makinde recently disclosed that his fallout with Wike began after Wike allegedly told President Tinubu during a meeting that he would “hold PDP” for him ahead of the 2027 elections.
Makinde said the statement was unsolicited and not agreed upon by other PDP stakeholders.
“The President did not ask him; do this for me, he was the one who volunteered that I would do this,” Makinde explained.
He stressed that while Wike is free to support Tinubu’s re-election bid, others within the PDP have the right to protect the party’s survival and resist moves that could weaken Nigeria’s democratic pluralism.
Makinde affirmed his independence in political decision-making: “That is why I will never support the President for 2027. Wike can support him; it is within his right, but it is also within my right within the political space to determine who I will support or what I will do in 2027.”
As of the time of reporting, the agenda of Makinde’s meeting with President Tinubu has not been made public, leaving speculation about whether it relates to PDP’s internal crisis, governance issues in Oyo State, or broader national politics.
