The Labour Party’s interim leadership, led by Senator Nenadi Usman, has expressed support for Peter Obi’s decision to join the AAfrican Democratic Congress (ADC).
In a statement issued in Abuja by Usman’s media aide, Ken Asogwa, the party said Obi’s participation in coalition talks had always enjoyed its backing.
“On 26th May 2025, the Labour Party confirmed that Mr. Obi’s involvement in the ADC coalition received the full blessings of the party,” Usman recalled.
She added that the party reiterated its support after the ADC’s official unveiling in July 2025.
“Following Mr. Obi’s formal entry into the ADC today, the Labour Party has not withdrawn the initial support extended to its 2023 presidential candidate,” the statement said.
Usman assured members that Obi’s exit would not derail the party. “All statutory organs will convene to chart a fresh and sustainable course. We are confident the fortunes of the party will be revitalised in no time,” she said.
The interim leadership pledged to continue its struggle to reclaim the party from entrenched interests and promised that the ongoing membership revalidation exercise would inject new energy.
Asogwa stressed that under Usman, the Labour Party would remain a credible alternative to “the APC’s rudderless government in 2027.”
The party concluded: “We remain confident that there is light at the end of the tunnel.”
