Ejike King George, the Chief Magistrate in the Rivers State judiciary, has resigned, citing discomfort with the state’s political leadership.
In a letter dated April 11, 2025, addressed to the Honourable Chief Judge of Rivers State, George expressed dissatisfaction with the governance style.
“This difficult and regrettable decision is informed largely by my discomfort with the recent appointment of a quasi-military administration to run the affairs of a modern State like ours,” he wrote.
He described the administration as “alien” and “antithetical” to democratic principles upheld by the judiciary.
George, who spent 22 years in legal practice, including 16 years with the Rivers State Judiciary, said staying in office would mean “tacit and naïve acquiescence.”
Political Turmoil in Rivers State
The resignation comes amid a political crisis in which Governor Siminalayi Fubara and elected officers were suspended by President Tinubu on March 18, 2025.
The president transferred administrative powers to a quasi-military Sole Administrator. The new sheriff in town has reputedly refused to comply with certain court orders.
George concluded his letter with gratitude, saying, “Thanks, Milord, for the opportunity to serve.”
