The Nigerian Armed Forces says it is activating Operation Ember Guard to bolster security across the South West geopolitical zone, following intelligence reports warning of potential threats during the festive and post‑festive period.

The operation, which began on December 23, 2025, will run until January 15, 2026, with the aim of maintaining peace, protecting lives and property, and ensuring the free movement of people and goods across the region.

At the flag‑off ceremony, Rear Admiral Abubakar Mustapha, Theatre Commander of the Joint Task Force South West, Operation AWATSE, explained that the decision was based on actionable intelligence suggesting a possible rise in criminal and security‑related activities.

He noted that the initiative reflects the strategic vision of the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, who has emphasised proactive engagement, intelligence‑led operations, and inter‑agency collaboration to prevent threats before they escalate.

Deployment and Community Cooperation

Troops drawn from the Armed Forces, working in synergy with other security agencies, have been deployed to critical locations across the South West to conduct patrols, surveillance, and rapid‑response operations.

Rear Admiral Mustapha assured residents that the military remains committed to professionalism and respect for human rights while carrying out its mandate, urging the public to go about their lawful activities without fear.

He also called on citizens to support the operation by providing timely and credible information to security agencies, stressing that community cooperation is vital to its success.

Operation Ember Guard is expected to complement existing security measures in the South West, reinforcing efforts to ensure a peaceful environment throughout the yuletide season and beyond.

The initiative is in line with well-known national strategy of intensifying security during periods of heightened movement and economic activity, particularly in regions vulnerable to banditry, armed robbery, and communal clashes.

The South West, home to major economic hubs such as Lagos and Ibadan, has faced challenges ranging from highway robberies to cult‑related violence.

By deploying Ember Guard, the military aims to reassure citizens and deter criminal networks that exploit holiday traffic and gatherings.
