APC Chairman Yilwatda Appoints 15 Aides, Opposition Parties Cry Foul

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, has approved the appointment of 15 aides.

The aides include Special Advisers, Advisers, and Senior Special Assistants (SSAs), in what the party describes as a move to strengthen its administrative and strategic capacity.

According to the APC, the appointments are designed to enhance coordination, policy formulation, and stakeholder engagement at the party’s national secretariat.

The aides are expected to provide professional support to the chairman as he steers the ruling party through internal management and national political strategy.

The announcement has drawn sharp criticism from opposition parties, who argue that the appointments reflect political patronage at a time when Nigerians are grappling with economic hardship.

Former ADC National Chairman Ralph Nwosu described the move as unsurprising, likening it to what he called the “bloated appointments” under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.

“The ruling APC is just doing whatever it wants without any recourse to what Nigerians are passing through in terms of suffering. Tell me where the funds for the remuneration of these aides will come from?” he asked, noting that during his tenure at the ADC he never had more than three aides.

Former PDP National Vice Chairman (South‑West), Eddy Olafeso, accused the APC of profligacy, warning that such “bogus appointments” at the party level mirror wasteful spending in government.

“If a national chairman is making such appointments, one can only imagine what is happening at the government level,” he said.

Similarly, Tanko Yinusa, spokesman for the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, lamented what he described as the “decay and wastage” introduced into governance by the APC.

He criticised the ruling party for failing to channel resources into critical sectors such as education and security, arguing that the appointments highlight misplaced priorities.

With inflation, unemployment, and insecurity dominating public discourse, critics argue that political leaders should demonstrate austerity and redirect funds toward national development.

For the APC, however, the appointments are presented as part of efforts to consolidate its internal machinery ahead of next election and policy battles.
