The Edo State Police Command has rescued 11 passengers abducted by armed hoodlums along the Lagos–Benin Expressway, though one driver tragically lost his life during the attack.

According to security analyst Zagazola Makama, the incident began when an unknown gang opened fire on the driver of an Audi car transporting plantains and two passengers.

Shortly after, a Toyota Hiace bus driven by Ubong Edet Okon, carrying ten passengers from Lagos to Akwa Ibom, was also ambushed.

The attackers forced the passengers into the bush before police operatives swiftly mobilised to the scene.

The rescued victims include Alhaji Mustapha Urmar, Queen Ogbowan, Blessing Ofem, Gift Sunday, Asngua Adakama, Ime Edet, Abasi Okon Nduye, Blessing Augustine Akpan, Thomas Kollins, Happiness Moses, and Victoria Nkemie.

Despite the successful rescue, two passengers remain missing, while the injured driver of the Toyota Hiace was rushed to Igbinedion University Teaching Hospital, where he was later confirmed dead.

His body has been deposited in the hospital morgue for preservation and autopsy.

Police authorities confirmed that combing and search operations are ongoing to locate the remaining victims and apprehend the suspects.

The operation underscores the growing challenge of highway banditry in Nigeria and the importance of rapid response by security forces to protect commuters.
