Worried about the intractable crisis tearing the Nigerian main opposition, People's Democratic Party (PDP) into rival factions, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has summoned the two warring groups to an emergency reconciliation meeting at its headquarters in Abuja.
The meeting, which is currently ongoing, brings together the faction led by former Minister Tanimu Turaki and the group backed by former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, headed by Abdulrahman Mohammed.
Turaki arrived with members of his National Working Committee (NWC), officials of the party secretariat, and former Niger State Governor Babangida Aliyu. Mohammed, on his part, was accompanied by members of his national caretaker committee, including the committee’s secretary, Senator Sam Anyanwu.
The emergency parley underscores INEC’s concern over the deepening divisions within the PDP, which have raised questions about the party’s cohesion ahead of future elections.
By convening both factions, the commission aims to foster dialogue, reduce tensions, and ensure compliance with electoral guidelines.
Observers note that the reconciliation effort is critical for Nigeria’s political stability, given the PDP’s role as the country’s main opposition party.
The outcome of the meeting could determine whether the party emerges united or continues to grapple with internal fractures that weaken its electoral prospects.
