A security analyst for East and West Africa, Brant Philip, has claimed that the alleged leader of the failed coup attempt in Benin Republic, Lt. Colonel Pascal Tigri, has fled across the border into Lomé, Togo.

Philip, speaking on the development, said: “Intelligence sources indicate that Lt. Col. Tigri escaped Benin shortly after the failed operation and is currently hiding in Lomé.”

Benin Republic authorities had earlier declared Tigri and two other soldiers wanted after they allegedly attempted to overthrow President Patrice Talon’s administration on Sunday, December 7, 2025.

According to Benin’s constitutional authorities, Tigri is being sought for his “direct role in orchestrating and coordinating the coup attempt,” adding that the trio fled immediately after their plot collapsed.

Confirming the situation, President Bola Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, wrote on his verified account: “Benin’s coup attempt has failed. The ring leader, Lt. Col. Pascal Tigri, is now on the run and has been declared wanted by the authorities.”

Benin’s security agencies have since intensified the hunt for the remaining suspects.
