United States Congressman Riley Moore who has repeatedly accused the Nigerian authorities of standing by and allowing genocide against its Christian population seem to be walking back his tough stand and now praising Nigeria’s commitment to tackling terrorism and ongoing killings.
He said this after meeting with National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu in Abuja on Sunday.
In a statement posted on X on Monday, Moore said discussions he had with Nigerian officials focused on insurgency in the North‑East and violence in the Middle Belt.
He described the issues as “a specific concern for President Donald Trump and myself.”
Moore had earlier called his visit to Nigeria “very productive,” noting ongoing diplomatic efforts to address Nigeria’s designation as a “Country of Particular Concern” by President Trump.
He said the delegation and Nigerian officials examined concrete steps that could improve security if fully implemented.
“There were concrete steps and actions discussed at length, that if fully executed, I believe will enhance security across the country for all Nigerians, disrupt and destroy terrorist organisations in the northeast and stop the killing of Christians – particularly in the Middle Belt,” Moore wrote.
Commendation for Tinubu
Moore also hailed President Bola Tinubu’s response to insurgency, commending the rescue of 100 Catholic school students in Niger State.
“This is a positive demonstration of the government’s increasing response to the security situation and shows commitment to the emergency declaration laid out by President Tinubu,” he said.
He added that the US’s sense of urgency was “positively received,” pointing to the newly established Nigeria‑US joint task force as evidence of growing cooperation.
The congressman expressed optimism despite acknowledging that more work is required.
“It is clear that there is an openness and willingness on the part of the Nigerian government to work with the United States to tackle these critical issues. Now, that openness has to translate to concrete action. There is much work still to be done, but things are moving in the right direction,” he said.
