Tech Billionaire Elon Musk Calls for the European Union to be Dissolved

Elon Musk set off a fresh debate on X with a blunt post: β€œThe EU should be abolished and sovereignty returned to individual countries, so that governments can better represent their people.”

The comment echoes Musk’s long-running complaints about European regulation and his broader preference for national-level decision-making.

Musk has previously criticised what he calls overbearing regulation in Europe and argued that heavy rules hamper innovation.

In this post he moved beyond policy complaint to propose dismantling the bloc’s supranational architecture β€” a step that would, if pursued, upend decades of European integration in trade, law and diplomacy.

What Could Post-EU Mean?

What would abolishing the EU actually mean? Practically, it would require the undoing of treaties, the loss of shared regulatory frameworks, and the return of many competences to national capitals.

Economists warn such a shock could disrupt supply chains and market rules; defenders of the EU point to its role in guaranteeing cross-border cooperation on trade, migration and security.

Musk’s comment is likely to energise two opposing audiences. Supporters who favour national sovereignty and lighter regulation may welcome the idea as a check on Brussels.

Others β€” including many analysts and pro-integration voices β€” will view it as a destabilising provocation that underestimates the practical benefits smaller states derive from the union.

Even as the post reverberates online, it raises bigger questions about the role of influential tech figures in political debate.

Should these tech billionaires be allowed to continue attempting to shape public institutions by social-media intervention? And should transnational governance be judged primarily by regulatory friction or by its capacity to solve cross-border problems that individual states struggle to handle alone?

Whatever the answer, Musk’s intervention keeps the European sovereignty-versus-integration debate alive β€” and forces a fresh look at whether the balance of power between Brussels and national capitals still matches citizens’ expectations.
