The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has disclosed that between 600,000 and 700,000 electricity meters are currently available for nationwide distribution.
Vice Chairman of NERC, Dr. Musiliu Oseni, made the announcement during his opening address at the 4th NESI Stakeholders Meeting in Abuja on Tuesday.
The Commission confirmed the remarks in a statement posted on its official X handle.
Dr. Oseni, who presided over his final NESI stakeholders’ session as Vice Chairman, challenged utility firms to improve publicity and accelerate the rollout of meters.
“There are currently 600,000 to 700,000 meters available in the country. Utilities must improve publicity. The government has made the investment, so the DisCos need to step up,” he said.
The Vice Chairman stressed that the availability of meters should translate into immediate relief for consumers, many of whom continue to face challenges with estimated billing.
Sector at a Crossroads
Addressing regulators, operators, and stakeholders, Oseni described the electricity sector as being at a “critical crossroads.” He highlighted the ongoing transition to State Electricity Regulatory Commissions, warning Distribution Companies (DisCos) to cooperate fully with new state regulators.
“No licensee is bigger than their regulator,” he emphasized, underscoring the need for compliance and accountability as the sector decentralizes.
Oseni also addressed recent misinformation in the media regarding the tenure of NERC Commissioners.
He explained that the “Staggering Principle” embedded in Section 36 of the Electricity Act was only applicable to the pioneer Commission under the Electricity Power Sector Reform Act (EPSRA).
He clarified that subsequent Chairmen and Commissioners are entitled to five-year tenures, as provided in Section 36(1) of the current Act.
