Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has formally joined the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which is a significant development as Nigeria heads to crucial 2027 general elections.
Atiku registered as a member at Jada Ward 1 in Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State, his home constituency.
This comes months after his resignation from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in July, following prolonged internal crises that weakened the party’s cohesion.
On Monday, Atiku announced his membership through his official X handle, posting a photo of himself holding his ADC membership card with the caption, “It’s official.”
His decision cements the ADC’s role as a coalition platform for opposition politicians seeking to challenge President Bola Tinubu in the next election cycle.
Aregbesola’s Symbolic Registration and ADC’s Push for Expansion
Atiku’s formal entrance follows the earlier announcement by former Osun State governor, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, who on November 19 commenced registration and membership validation.
Aregbesola had shared his symbolic registration at Ward 8, Unit 1, Ifofin, in Ilesa East Local Government Area of Osun State, urging existing members to validate their membership and encouraging new entrants to register.

“As a demonstration of my commitment, I completed my own symbolic registration at Ward 8, Unit 1, Ifofin, in Ilesa East Local Government Area of Osun State,” Aregbesola said via his social media handles.
The ADC leadership has welcomed Atiku’s decision, viewing it as a boost to the party’s credibility and national reach.
The entry of high‑profile politicians like Atiku and Aregbesola could transform the ADC from a fringe party into a major opposition force.
Atiku’s adoption of the ADC as a coalition platform was first signaled in July, when he led discussions on uniting opposition figures under one umbrella to mount a credible challenge in 2027.
His official registration now provides clarity on his political direction and sets the stage for intensified mobilization across Nigeria.
In 2019, Atiku ran with youth-popular politician Peter Obi as his vice-presidential candidate. Obi has indicated intent to join the ADC. If he does, analyst believe that would almost complete the list of power-candidates for the party’s nomination of a presidential flagbearer.
