Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja has stopped the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) from holding its planned 2025 National Convention.
The court ruled that the event cannot proceed until the party complies with the Constitution, Electoral Act, and its own statutory guidelines.
The convention was scheduled for November 15 and 16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State, where new national officers were to be elected.
The judgment came after three aggrieved members of the party filed a suit, alleging violations of internal procedures and constitutional provisions.
INEC Also Restrained
Justice Omotosho also restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from accepting or recognising the outcome of any PDP convention conducted without full compliance with the law.
He ruled that INEC has “no entitlement to give effect to a convention not done in accordance with the Constitution, Electoral Act, and the party’s regulations.”
The court noted that due process must be observed in all internal elections of political parties. Anything short of that, it said, would amount to illegality and abuse of internal democracy.
The plaintiffs had named nine defendants in the suit, including INEC, the PDP, National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu, National Organising Secretary Umar Bature, the National Working Committee (NWC), and the National Executive Committee (NEC).
Others are Acting National Chairman Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum, Ali Odefa, and Emmanuel Ogidi.
The judgment could delay the PDP’s ongoing internal restructuring and worsen existing divisions within the party, potentially making the party unprepared as a serious contender in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
