Eight Groups Advance in Bid for Party Registration, Six Disqualified – INEC

Eight political associations have crossed the first hurdle in Nigeria’s political party registration process, while six others were disqualified, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said on Thursday.

INEC’s National Commissioner for Information and Voter Education, Sam Olumekun, confirmed the development after the commission’s meeting held on October 30, 2025.

The meeting reviewed progress since its earlier update in September, when 14 associations were pre-qualified to participate in the screening.

The process began on September 17 with an official briefing and a digital portal opened for document uploads from September 18 to October 18.

By October 19, only eight groups had completed all requirements on the INEC portal.

“As of Saturday, 19th October 2025, eight out of the 14 pre-qualified associations successfully completed the upload of all necessary information and documentation,” the statement read.

The successful groups include the All Democratic Alliance, Citizens Democratic Alliance, Abundance Social Party, African Alliance Party, Democratic Leadership Alliance, Green Future Party, National Democratic Party, and Peoples Freedom Party.

Verification Phase Begins

The commission said the next stage would involve a detailed review of each submission to ensure compliance with the 1999 Constitution, the Electoral Act 2022, and INEC’s internal regulations for political parties.

“This stage will ensure conformity with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution, the Electoral Act 2022, and the Commission’s Guidelines for Political Parties,” INEC said.

Olumekun added that INEC remains “committed to inclusivity, transparency, and the deepening of Nigeria’s democratic culture.”

The commission earlier disclosed that it had received no fewer than 171 letters of intent from political associations seeking registration — a reminder of how fluid Nigeria’s political space remains.
