Prolonged Zenith Bank Network Disruption Leads To Customer Outrage And Conspiracy Theory

Zenith Bank customers are still experiencing network outages that began late Monday night, disrupting transactions via the mobile app, web, and USSD services.

The bank had notified their customers of routine maintenance scheduled for September 29 to October 1, with an expected completion by 2:30 PM on Tuesday. However, many customers report continued problems accessing banking services.

Users took to social media, particularly X (formerly Twitter), to vent their frustrations. Some cited difficulties withdrawing money or completing essential transactions, with one user stating, “I haven’t eaten all day because I wasn’t able to withdraw money today.”

Others criticized the timing of the maintenance, suggesting such disruptions should occur at night to minimize customer impact, especially at the end of the month when salaries are typically processed.

Some users are also propagating a conspiracy theory that the outage may be linked to government pressure in case the #FearlessInOctober protests progress during the October 1 Independence Day anniversary.

Zenith Bank responded by reiterating that the outage was part of a scheduled IT upgrade aimed at improving service quality.

However, the incident is leading to disaffection against Zenith Bank, one of Nigeria’s top banking brands, with customers complaining of the frequency of service disruptions in the bank.

First Bank customers have also reported similar downtime issues, further fuelling the conspiracy theory, but also highlighting the challenges of digital banking in Nigeria.

As complaints grow, customers hope for a swift resolution to the ongoing outage so they can access their savings for their daily survival – no matter how small it may be.
