Morocco Makes History for Africa, Wins U-20 World Cup Over Argentina

Morocco stunned the football world on Sunday night in Santiago, Chile, defeating Argentina 2–0 to win the FIFA U-20 World Cup — the country’s first-ever World Cup triumph at any level.

The victory marked a defining moment for African football. Morocco became the first African nation to lift the U-20 title since Ghana’s golden generation triumphed in 2009.

Yassir Zabiri, who plays for FC Famalicão in Portugal, was the hero of the night, scoring both goals in the first half. His clinical finishes silenced a packed Chilean crowd and gave Morocco an early two-goal cushion that Argentina never managed to overturn.

Morocco’s path to glory was anything but easy. The young Atlas Lions defeated South Korea, the United States, and France in the knockout rounds before capping their dream run against Argentina.

A Dream Denied for Argentina

The South American giants came into the final unbeaten and were eyeing their seventh title. But without starlets Claudio Echeverri of Bayer Leverkusen and Real Madrid’s Franco Mastantuono, Argentina struggled to match Morocco’s pace and tactical discipline.

The loss doesn’t diminish Argentina’s legacy — their senior side remains the defending world champion after their 2022 triumph in Qatar, and they have already qualified for the 2026 World Cup.

For Morocco, the victory is another milestone in the country’s football renaissance, following the senior team’s semi-final heroics at the 2022 World Cup.

Say a word of congratulations to Morocco, and to Africa too, here at the comments section. And do you think this young Moroccan squad may be the beginning of Africa’s next great football dynasty?
