The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has begun a two-week warning strike across Nigeria after the expiration of its 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government.
The decision was announced on Sunday in Abuja by the ASUU President, Professor Chris Piwuna, who said the action takes effect from midnight.
“Consequently, all branches of ASUU are hereby directed to withdraw their services with effect from 12:01 a.m. on Monday, 13th October 2025,” he said. “The warning strike shall be total and comprehensive as agreed at the last NEC meeting.”
Union’s Frustration Boils Over
ASUU said the strike became inevitable after repeated efforts to get the government to honour its agreements failed.
The union has been locked in years-long disputes with the Federal Government over unpaid allowances, poor infrastructure, and what it calls the “systemic neglect of public universities.”
The current action follows a 14-day ultimatum issued on September 28, 2025, demanding that the government resolve long-standing issues affecting the university system, including the renegotiation of the 2009 agreement and improved funding for tertiary education.
Many students fear this could mark the beginning of another prolonged closure of universities, while parents and education advocates are urging both sides to return to the dialogue table.

A Call for Action, Not Promises
ASUU insists that its demands are not new. The union argues that successive governments have failed to implement signed agreements, especially concerning salary arrears, earned academic allowances, and the adoption of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS) as a payment platform.
Professor Piwuna urged the Federal Government to show sincerity and commitment, stressing that the welfare of lecturers and the survival of public education are at stake.
“We cannot continue to beg for what is due to us,” he said, adding that the union is prepared for a full-scale strike if the government remains unresponsive.
