A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, has described recent verbal attacks on Opposition leaders by loyalists of President Bola Tinubu as โinfantile and misplaced.โ
Eze said it was disappointing that those close to the President had resorted to insults rather than engaging in meaningful political debate. He called their attacks on former President Goodluck Jonathan and other prominent leaders like Atiku Abubakar, Chibuike Amaechi, and Peter Obi โa misadventure bound to backfire.โ
In a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Thursday, Eze said the Presidencyโs attempt to discredit Atiku was an act of โdeliberate ignorance of who Atiku is in Africa.โ He said any plan to reduce the former Vice Presidentโs political standing before the 2027 elections would โsurely fail.โ
โA Campaign of Deceit and Propagandaโ
Eze said: โEven President Bola Tinubu knows that his men are dwelling on woeful propaganda and a deceitful smear campaign against a man he has hailed in several fora as a true Nigerian democrat and pillar of democracy in Africa.โ
He questioned why those in power would now seek to paint Atiku, once admired across political divides, as a sectional leader.
โIf for the sake of scoring cheap political goals, the Presidency tries to portray Atiku, one of Nigeriaโs finest politicians and a political Colossus, as a sectional leader, what then becomes of Tinubu, their paymaster, who has carved a niche for himself as Nigeriaโs number one ethnic bigot and nepotistic President?โ Eze said.
He added that most Nigerians already know โwho between Tinubu and Atiku is the true sectional leader,โ describing the smear campaign as โa case of pot calling kettle black.โ
Opposition Unity Ahead of 2027
Eze said opposition figures such as Jonathan, Amaechi, and Obi are determined to form a common front to rescue Nigeriaโs deteriorating economy and rebuild trust in government.
โSuch individuals like former President Jonathan; former Governor Amaechi, former Governor Obi and others are committed to projecting a common front to redeem our deteriorating economy, rebuild our wobbling health system, tackle corruption and restore public confidence in government. And this will happen from 2027 with a new government,โ he said.
Does Eze have a valid point, or can his position be interpreted as a sign of disloyalty and anti-party activity?
