United Capital Holds Memorial for Six Staff Lost in Lagos Fire

United Capital Group has held a memorial service for six members of staff who died in the September 16 fire at Afriland Towers, Lagos.

The solemn gathering took place on Wednesday at Harbour Point, Victoria Island. It drew regulators, market leaders, partners, clients, and families of the deceased.

The company also streamed the service live, with viewing centres in Abuja and Port Harcourt. This allowed many colleagues across Nigeria to join in mourning.

A Day of Tributes and Tears

Group CEO Peter Ashade led a moment of silence. He shared touching recollections of each victim and encouraged the families. โ€œThe loss is immeasurable, but their impact will forever remain with us,โ€ he said.

Tony Elumelu, chairman of Heirs Holdings, also spoke with visible emotion. โ€œWe stand with the families, united in grief and in remembrance,โ€ he noted.

The service featured tributes from relatives, friends, and colleagues. They painted vivid pictures of lives cut short but full of meaning.

Clergy and artists also offered support. Pastor Ituah Ighodalo urged the crowd to find hope in their pain, while singer Timi Dakolo delivered a stirring performance. His voice left the hall in quiet reflection.

Guests described the ceremony as dignified and respectful. They said it honoured the departed in a way befitting their memory and service.

United Capital, in its closing statement, reaffirmed the value of the fallen. โ€œTheir memories, impact, and contributions will live on in the hearts of all who knew them,โ€ the company said.

The Lagos State Fire Service is still investigating the Afriland Towers incident, reportedly triggered by an electric inverter in the control room. Could more have been done to prevent the tragedy?
