Enugu State Government has taken a big leap towards reshaping education in the state with the launch of Smart Green Schools on Monday. The project marks a break from rote learning to hands-on, technology-driven education for every child in the state.
Governor Peter Mbah, in a statewide broadcast, described the programme as a covenant with the future. “We are no longer a state waiting to be saved – we are a state shaping the future on our own terms,” he declared.
He stressed that Africa’s destiny rests on the minds and hearts of its youth. The new schools, he said, will give Enugu children the skills to compete in the global economy.
What the New Schools Offer
Each of the 260 Smart Green Schools is designed as a full learning ecosystem. They contain 25 digitally connected classrooms, ICT centres, robotics and AI labs, e-libraries, and innovation hubs for practical learning.
Powered by renewable energy, the schools also feature smart farms where pupils learn modern agriculture by doing, not just reading. They come with free uniforms, books, meals, and tablets for every child.
To guarantee quality and continuity, every school has on-site clinics, water systems, and teachers’ housing. This, officials say, will keep educators motivated and communities involved.
Opening Schedule and Community Role
Mbah admitted that while some schools opened on Monday, others will begin within the next two weeks due to construction delays. “We do not claim perfection. What we do claim is resolve. Every school shall be open this term. No school’s academic calendar will be interrupted,” he assured.
He urged residents to guard the schools and support the teachers. “Smart Green Schools are not just an investment in classrooms, but in the soul of our people. A generation raised in schools of innovation will build an economy of innovation,” he said.
The governor reaffirmed that 33% of the state budget is dedicated to education, the highest in Nigeria. He called it an investment in “the truest capital of our society – human potential.”
