The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has imposed a ₦5 million fine on property owners in Abuja who converted their buildings without securing proper approvals.
In a notice published Monday, the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) said affected owners have 30 days to regularise their titles or face more sanctions.
Most of the listed buildings sit in highbrow districts such as Maitama, Asokoro, Wuse II, and Garki. They had been illegally converted from residential to commercial use.
“This is to notify the general public, particularly allottees and title holders of properties, that the Honourable Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, His Excellency, Barr. Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, CON, has approved a reviewed land use/purpose clause of properties on the underlisted streets/locations of the Federal Capital City,” the notice read.
Fresh Rights of Occupancy
The directive requires owners to pay a penalty fee of ₦5 million at the Department of Land Administration, Central Business District, Abuja. They will then obtain letters of approval for the land use conversion.
Wike also approved the issuance of new statutory rights of occupancy and certificates of occupancy. These will reflect the updated land use and extend for a fresh term of 99 years once all conditions are met.
However, the FCTA clarified that the exercise excludes properties whose titles were previously revoked due to non-development, unpaid ground rent, or other infractions.
Notable Names on the List
Among the prominent names affected are Abdullahi Ganduje, former national chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC); Olagunsoye Oyinlola, ex-governor of Osun State; and former Supreme Court Justices Atanda Fatai-Williams and Aloma Mariam Mukhtar.
Also listed is the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC), one of the largest corporate property owners in Abuja.
The move marks another step in Wike’s ongoing campaign to enforce land administration rules in the capital city.
