Nigeria’s Federal Government has raised an alarm over possible floods in 14 states between September 4 and September 8, 2025.
The warning came from the Federal Ministry of Environment through its National Flood Early Warning Centre. It was signed by Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood and Coastal Zone Management Department.
According to the alert, 43 locations face threats of heavy rainfall and possible flooding. Communities at risk stretch across the North and South, from Ebonyi to Yobe.
States and Communities at Risk
The flood warning covers Ebonyi (Afikpo), Cross River (Edor, Ikom, Itigidi, Akpap), Kano (Gwarzo, Karaye), Zamfara (Anka, Gummi, Kaura Namoda, Maradun, Shinkafi, Bukkuyum), and Taraba (Dampar, Duchi, Garkowa, Gassol, Gembu, Gun Gun Bodel, Kambari, Mayo Ranewo, Mutum Biyu, Bandawa, Ngaruwa).
Others include Abia (Eziama, Umuahia), Yobe (Geidam, Kanama, Potiskum), Plateau (Langtang, Shendam, Wase), Borno (Ngala), Imo (Okigwe, Otoko), Niger (Sarki Pawa), Sokoto (Sokoto, Wamakko, Isa, Shagari, Makira), Kaduna (Kafanchan), and Akwa Ibom (Oron).
The Ministry advised residents in these areas to remain vigilant and prepare for possible evacuations. Nigeria has battled recurring floods in recent years, leaving thousands displaced and damaging farmlands.
Lagos Sounds Alarm on Lagoon Crisis
Meanwhile, Lagos State Government has warned of a looming disaster in the Lagos Lagoon. The Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Dayo Alebiosu, said urgent action was needed.
Speaking at a media briefing in Alausa, Ikeja, Alebiosu noted that some waterfront communities had already been wiped away by coastal erosion. “Idotun Village in Ibeju-Lekki has been completely destroyed, displacing residents and livelihoods,” he said.
The state has scheduled its maiden Waterfront Summit for September 11 on Victoria Island. The summit, themed “Pressure on the Lagoon: The Lagos Experience”, will host over 500 experts from across the world to discuss solutions.
Officials say unchecked pollution, unregulated dredging, and rising sea levels threaten the Lagoon’s survival.
