Federal universities across Nigeria have started hiring new staff. The move comes after years of silence caused by a government ban.
The ban, imposed under former President Muhammadu Buhari, blocked employment in tertiary institutions. That restriction has now been lifted by President Bola Tinubu.
The Ministry of Education confirmed the development. Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa said the ministry will supervise the process.
“This directive aims to ensure a transparent, open, and competitive recruitment process that offers equal opportunity to all eligible Nigerians,” the statement read.
Institutions must first obtain waivers before hiring. They are also required to advertise vacancies in national newspapers, on their websites, and in academic journals.
Staff Shortages and the Japa Effect
Nigeria’s universities have suffered staffing shortages for years. Many lecturers left the country in search of better pay and working conditions.
The trend, known as “japa,” has drained the system. Retirements and deaths worsened the problem, leaving remaining staff overwhelmed.
Prof. Victor Osodeke, former ASUU president, said lecturers were overworked. Prof. Ikechukwu Onyishi of UNN added, “Many lecturers have retired, some died on active duty, while others resigned and left the country in search of greener pastures due to poor pay and benefits in public universities.”
Vacancies Already Advertised
Leading institutions have started advertising positions. These include UNILAG, OAU, UNIPORT, UNICAL, UI, UNIMAID, and FUNAAB.
Others like Federal Polytechnic Ilaro, Federal University of Education Pankshin, and Federal College of Education Yola have joined the list.
Federal University Dutse also opened applications for academic and non-academic roles. Positions range from Graduate Assistant to Professor.
Education activist Ayodamola Oluwatoyin welcomed the move. “We at Reform Education Nigeria are pleased with the news, as this will reduce the burden on lecturers,” he said.
He urged institutions to ensure fairness and give young academics a chance.
The Ministry’s Director of Press, Folasade Boriowo, said they will monitor the process closely to ensure transparency.
