Step-by-Step Guide: How to Apply for a Schengen Visa from Nigeria

Nigerians love to explore Europe, and rightly so. The continent is one of the closest to Africa, and both have fascinated each other for centuries.

Africa and Europe share a complicated history, with some unsavoury chapters. Yet today, education, tourism, migration, and trade continue to draw both continents closer.

So, it’s no surprise that your next destination of choice may be France, Germany, Belgium, or other European gems.

It’s worth noting that the United Kingdom—despite its deep footprint of influence in Africa—is not part of the Schengen area. Travelling to the UK requires a separate visa process.

The Schengen zone currently covers 29 countries, including most EU members except Ireland, plus a few non-EU states like Switzerland and Norway.

But if your dream is to visit any of the 29 Schengen countries, the first hurdle is securing a Schengen visa. Getting it can feel complex, but with the right guide, the process is smoother. JolibaLive has mapped out the clearest path to apply successfully in 2025.

Know the Type of Schengen Visa You Need

First, decide what you need the visa for. Is it tourism, study, work, or medical? The Schengen states issue short-term visas for up to 90 days within 180 days. Long-stay visas are different.

“If you plan to tour Europe, apply for a short-term Schengen visa,” says the European Union’s visa portal. This step saves you wasted effort.

Gather the Right Documents

Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your return date. Add two recent passport photographs, completed visa application form, proof of accommodation, flight reservation, and travel insurance.

“Every Schengen visa applicant must show proof of sufficient funds,” notes the EU Commission. Bank statements for the last three to six months usually work.

Submit at the Right Embassy

Apply at the embassy of the country where you will spend the most days. If staying equal days in several countries, apply at the first entry point.

For Nigerians, popular embassies include France, Italy, Germany, and Spain. Book an appointment online, as most embassies do not accept walk-ins.

Attend the Visa Interview

On the interview day, arrive early with your documents arranged neatly. Be ready to answer questions about your travel plans, income, and ties to Nigeria.

“Honesty and clarity give applicants the best chance of approval,” says a Lagos-based visa consultant. Nervousness is normal, but confidence helps.

Pay the Visa Fee

The standard fee is €80 for adults and €40 for children between 6 and 12 years. Payment is often in naira at the embassy’s official exchange rate. Some embassies accept card payments, others cash only. (You can check the Euro-Naira conversion rates in the JolibaLive Business page).

Travel insurance covering at least €30,000 in medical expenses is mandatory before submission.

Wait for Processing

Processing usually takes 15 working days, though busy seasons can take longer. Track your application online using the reference number given at submission.

If approved, you’ll get a visa sticker in your passport. If denied, the embassy will give a written reason. Applicants may appeal within the given timeframe.

Final Thoughts

With preparation, Nigerians can get Schengen visas without stress. The key is correct documents, truthful answers, and early application.
