Bauchi Gov Propose Southern Christian Presidential Candidate for PDP in 2027

Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has advised the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to look southwards for its 2027 presidential ticket.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Tonight on Thursday, the governor said the PDP must avoid repeating what he described as the “mistake” of a Muslim-Muslim ticket.

“Everybody should know that PDP is open, and it’s open in a manner that it is for the southerner to bring somebody,” Mohammed said.

“We Don’t Want PDP in a Cul-de-Sac”

The governor stressed that the party needs balance to truly reflect Nigeria’s diversity. “We don’t want to make the mistake of the APC. We need a Christian from the South to emerge as a presidential candidate so that he will lead the majority of Christian southerners to come and pick the majority Muslim vice president in the North, not to put ourselves in a cul-de-sac, the way and manner APC did in 2023.”

Mohammed explained that the PDP must present a ticket that inspires confidence across the regions. He noted that the 2023 APC Muslim-Muslim ticket caused unease among many Nigerians, particularly in the South.

The Bauchi governor also assured that the PDP has strong options for pairing in 2027. “We have so many options in terms of pairing, and I will support whoever emerges as the presidential candidate,” he added.

Political watchers believe that his comments may be an early attempt to shape PDP’s strategy as the party prepares to challenge the ruling APC in 2027. The debate over religion, zoning, and inclusivity is likely to dominate conversations in the months ahead.

Bala Mohammed called the muslim-muslim ticket that won a “mistake”. Do you agree with him? But is it inevitable that religion and regional balance should remain central in choosing Nigeria’s leaders? Or should competence and track record matter more than zoning formulas? Share your thoughts below.
