A former governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Cross River State, Mr. Effiong Efa Nyong, has criticized the government for buying two new aircraft for Cally Air.
Nyong spoke at the recent ADC stakeholders’ meeting in Calabar, calling the purchase a “misplaced priority” and accusing the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of ignoring citizens’ struggles.
Cross Riverians face financial difficulties, rising food costs, and crumbling infrastructure.
“You can imagine a government spending millions of dollars to acquire aircraft in a state where there is no public transportation system, no buses to convey the common man, no good roads to move produce from rural areas to townships. It is terrible,” he said.
Nyong reminisced about former Governor Donald Duke‘s Cross Lines and Metro Blue buses that offered affordable travel options, significantly aiding the local population.
He argued that the cost of these aircraft could instead improve daily life, such as by buying many buses and repairing roads to serve the people.
Healthcare and Infrastructure Issues
Nyong further highlighted the dire situation in hospitals, pointing out the lack of medical facilities, insufficient doctors, and unreliable electricity in health centers.
“This is not about personal interest or not liking the face of anybody. We just have to put things right,” he insisted, accusing officials of resisting new ideas and collaborations.
Former Chairman of the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and ADC leader, Mr. Akin Ricketts, shared the ADC’s resolve to gain control in future elections.
He emphasized, “Nigerians cannot afford to continue to suffer beyond 2027. The ADC is the only party with the genuine interest of the people at heart and would definitely change the narrative come 2027,” asserting the party’s commitment to making a difference.
