The Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) in Abeokuta has accused the EFCC of launching a politically charged midnight raid on its premises.
The management says the operation was reckless, unlawful, and aimed at embarrassing former President Olusegun Obasanjo.
The raid happened around 1 a.m. on August 10, 2025. Over 100 guests were arrested. Many sustained injuries. Some are still in hospital.
“It was an uncoordinated and reckless operation,” said Vitalis Ortese, Managing Director of OOPL. “Shots were fired indiscriminately. Innocent lives were endangered.”
Ortese said the EFCC violated its own November 2023 directive banning night-time sting operations. He described the raid as “aggravated, unconstitutional, oppressive, capricious, arbitrary, and actuated by malice.”
The library is demanding ₦1 billion for bodily injuries and ₦2.5 billion for reputational and financial damage. It also wants public apologies from EFCC Chairman Ola Olukoyede and Police IG Kayode Egbetokun.
“We demand apologies in national newspapers, TV stations like NTA, Arise, Channels, and on social media including Facebook, TikTok, and X,” Ortese said.
Failure to meet these demands within seven days will lead to legal action. The management says its court claims will exceed the current demands.
Raid Threatens Ogun’s Tourism and Investment
Ortese called on Governor Dapo Abiodun to act. He warned that the raid could damage Ogun State’s economy and reputation.
“This is a wake-up call. The prosperity mantra you champion is being eroded,” he said. “We urge you to investigate this incident thoroughly and ensure that Ogun State does not become a Somalia of institutional lawlessness.”
He added that Obasanjo, his family, and associates live on the premises. The raid disrupted lawful activities, including a party attended by youths, tourists, and entrepreneurs.
“This is not just about OOPL. It is about the soul of our democracy,” Ortese said. “The right of every Nigerian to live, work, and gather in peace.”
The EFCC confirmed the raid on its X handle. It said 93 suspected internet fraudsters were arrested based on credible intelligence. 18 vehicles and several mobile devices were recovered.
