Operatives of the Enugu State Police Command SWAT Squad arrested a 27-year-old man, Desmond Obodo Chilota, during a routine patrol in the Uwani area of Enugu on Sunday, January 18.
Police said the arrest took place at about 6:13 a.m., when Chilota, disguised as a dispatch rider, was caught conveying a large quantity of restricted tramadol on a red Kymco motorcycle, which was also recovered.
Later that morning, at about 7:12 a.m., the same patrol team recovered an abandoned bag containing substances suspected to be crystal methamphetamine (locally known as “Mkpuru-mmiri”) and an Android mobile phone at Onu-Asata, Ogui.
The suspected traffickers reportedly fled upon sighting the operatives.
Confirming the incident, Command spokesperson SP Daniel Ndukwe said the arrested suspect and recovered exhibits are undergoing investigation, while efforts are ongoing to track down the fleeing suspects.
He added that Commissioner of Police CP Mamman Bitrus Giwa has reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to sustained patrols and intelligence-led operations to curb drug-related and other criminal activities across the state.
Ndukwe urged residents to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and supportive of police efforts in the fight against crime.
