Abia State will welcome the world this September. Athletes from 20 countries and over 200 internationally based competitors will converge on Umuahia.

The occasion is the Maiden Para Badminton International and the All-Africa Para Badminton Championships.

The events are organised by the Badminton Federation of Nigeria and the Abia State Badminton Association, in partnership with the Abia State Government and the Federal Ministry of Sports.

A Celebration of Inclusion and Resilience

Deputy Governor Ikechukwu Emetu called it a defining moment for Abia.
“This event is historic and a celebration of inclusion and resilience,” he said.
He described the hosting as a turning point for sports development in the state.

Chief Emetu commended Governor Alex Otti’s focus on youth empowerment through sports. He urged institutions, sponsors, and media to rally behind the championships and project Abia positively to the world.

Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba, confirmed that funds have been released for the games.

“Governor Otti has also procured advanced para badminton maintenance equipment,” he said.

The governor approved a specialised mobility bus for para athletes in Abia.
This bus will improve accessibility and ease transport for participants and local competitors.

Global Spotlight on Abia

Joining via Zoom, Francis Orbih, National President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, praised the governor’s commitment. He noted Otti’s sponsorship of Abia’s contingent to the World Para Badminton Championships.

“The national body will fully support the success of this championship,” Orbih assured.

Mr. Ekeoma Samuel, 2nd Vice Chairman of the Para Badminton Federation of Nigeria, added that the games are “a unique opportunity for Abia to showcase its potential on the continental stage.”
